New Climate-robust Landscapes professor Ellen Weerman to connect agriculture and nature
On 1 January 2022, Dr Ellen Weerman started heading the new research group 'Climate-robust Landscapes: connecting agriculture and nature' at HAS University of Applied Sciences and research institute NIOO-KNAW. The research group is examining how alternative forms of agriculture can help improve water quality and biodiversity by using the landscape intelligently.

HAS University of Applied Sciences develops new English-taught minors designed to future-proof the agri-food sector
HAS University of Applied Sciences has developed six new English-taught minors for higher professional education (HBO)students. The minors respond to current social issues requiring an integrated approach in the agri, food and living environment sector. Future-proofing the agri-food sector is a central theme in various minors, each emphasising a different aspect.

Fred van de Velde, lector in Protein Transition in Food, to step down
After more than eight years of intensive involvement in the launch and further development of the Protein Transition in Food research group at HAS green academy, Fred van de Velde (NIZO) is stepping down as lector. The importance, scope and depth of the protein transition has grown enormously. Due to the increasing number of tasks in this field, NIZO can no longer combine this with the role of lector. NIZO and HAS green academy are going to work together in a different way.

Horticulture & Business Management: Learning how to be a grower
HAS green academy has made the headlines quite a few times, with its many research partnerships with different horti suppliers. At the same time, the University of Applied Sciences also allows its students to get their hands dirty without the constant supervision of a more expert person.

Graduating students investigate avocado value chain in Kenya
HAS green academy is working until May 2024 on the FORQLAB project, food loss/waste and food quality in the Kenyan avocado value chain. In a series of graduation assignments, students, lecturers and education and industry partners will take a close look at avocado cultivation in central and western Kenya.

HAS and Avans aim to improve the health and lifestyle of inhabitants through research programme
HAS green academy and Avans University of Applied Sciences are implementing a research infrastructure within the Healthy Living Environments programme, together with a large group of consortium partners. This will see the development of new knowledge, methods and best practices in the area of healthy living environments. These are environments that contribute to longer and healthier lives for the people in these environments. The educational institutions were recently awarded a SPRONG grant for phase 1 of the programme.

Ingeborg Haagsma-Boels new professor of Protein Transition in Food
On 1 January 2023, Dr Ingeborg Haagsma-Boels was appointed as professor of Protein Transition in Food. She takes over from Fred van de Velde. Her arrival broadens the scope of the research group to include the development of products with alternative proteins for human consumption. This means that the research group will focus on cellular agriculture and insects, as well as plant based proteins.

Futureproof livestock farming
We report the successful completion on the 24th of March 2023 of the first Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) course that combined both physical and virtual learning. The BIP course was organized by four different higher education institutions from 4 different Erasmus+ programme countries, Finland (SeAMK - Proponent), Netherlands (HAS green academy), Portugal (IPC-ESAC) and Spain (UVA-ETSIIAA) and was funded by the Erasmus+ mobility programme. The course “Future proof animal production system” began with a physical learning session in the organising country, Finland (SeAMK) from the 6th to the 10th of March. The virtual learning sessions were held from the 13th to the 24th of March 2023. A total of 20 students attended the course and successfully completed all the objectives defined in the course.

During the international SEAD-West project, HAS green academy worked on the development of horticultural education in the western province of Rwanda. How can we give this a boost and what guidance is needed? The project was completed for HAS green academy.

HAS green academy wins international design award
HAS green academy, university of applied sciences and knowledge institution for agriculture, food and the living environment in Den Bosch and Venlo, has won an international design award. The new house style, created by Venlo based design studio Luidspreker, has been awarded a Red Dot Design Award: Brands & Communication Design 2023 in the category Corporate Design & Identity.

Under the leadership and direction of Frans van Leijden, HAS green academy (in his time HAS hogeschool) in Venlo has become a vibrant branch. As a tribute to him, following his death in 2020, we have therefore created the Frans van Leijden Award. This year we are presenting this award for the 2nd time.
